This walk provides a contrast of two Derbyshire limestone dales - the gentle Bradford Dale and more rugged Lathkill Dale. The route goes through a National Nature Reserve (please keep dogs on leads) and passes a number of remnants depicting the industrial past. The walk is generally flat on good footpaths but there is one steep slope including over 100 steps! Youlgreave contains an excellent Cafe and a number of pubs selling a wide variety of beers. The route does not pass any other watering holes; but a short diversion can be made to Over Haddon about half way round if you wish.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION

Exit the public car park at Youlgreave, cross road and turn left along the pavement towards the village.  Turn right at Holywell Lane (telephone box on corner) and then immediately left into Brookleton, signposted 'No through road'.  At end of road follow path down to river (River Bradford).  Turn left at river and continue to gate.  Cross road and continue ahead (river on right then left).

Q1.    Where stone bridge crosses river there is a bench on right.  In loving memory of whom?

Continue along riverbank.  Where track turns right, away from river, ignore this and go through kissing gate and continue with river on left.  Go through squeeze stile to left of gate and up to road.  Cross road and continue along path opposite (signposted Conksbury Bridge).  Follow path with fence then wall on right hand side through 9 stiles/squeeze stiles/gaps to minor lane.  (From a short diversion of 100m along this you will be able to view the trout in the river).  Continue straight ahead over lane crossing a squeeze stile and further stile to reach road.  Turn right and follow road over bridge.

Q2.    Just before bridge in field on right there is a sign 'Private Fishing Always (What)?

Turn left just over bridge and follow path through gate and then a series of gates/kissing gates to eventually reach Lathkill Lodge.  Turn right here and immediately left through gate (Lathkill Dale National Nature Reserve).  After 2kms go through squeeze stile.

Q3.    On plaque just before stile - what is the telephone number of Site Manager?

Continue ahead on path through second squeeze stile (400m) then kissing gate.  Continue until you reach wooden bridge on left.  Turn left over bridge and stile (yellow way mark) and follow path uphill.  Where path forks take left fork, go over stile and up steep path and steps.  Go through kissing gate and straight ahead through two more.  After third kissing gate go diagonally right towards barn.  Through another kissing gate and then left with wall on left hand side.  Go through kissing gate.

Q4.    Low Moor Wood Sign - what anniversary is this?

Follow path through spinney.  Through gate and diagonally right to another gate; then, after 20m yet another gate.  Turn right to go through kissing gate in wall after 50m.  Go diagonally left towards top corner of field.  Go through gate and turn left ahead to further stile.  Straight ahead on well defined path.  Cross stile and go diagonally right across field.  Cross wall stile and bear left, then after 20m cross further wall stile and continue straight ahead.  Cross stile to road; turn left and take right hand fork of road (signposted Picnic Area).  Just after Moor Lane Picnic Area turn right along path and follow to stile at left of gate (yellow way mark).  Go diagonally to tree (stile at side!) and continue 9in same direction on path.  Go through gap in wall towards barn.  Cross stile and road and turn left along road (with care!).  After 50m turn right down steps and along footpath.  Continue on path through parkland to minor road.  Cross road and turn right along pavement.  After 400m (just after sharp left hand bend) go through gap in wall and take path on left downhill.  Follow path to cross bridge over river.

Q5.    Footpath sign - You are now on the Limestone Way.  What number is on this fingerpost?

Turn left along footpath and go through gate with river on left hand side.  After approximately 1km go through gate on left hand side over stone bridge and up lane opposite.  At end of lane turn left along road back to car park.
