ROUTE  DESCRIPTION

Walk towards the information centre here you will find good toilets but refreshments are not always available. Continue up to the museum on the left and the Fort on the right, carry on up the hill till you reach the wall.

Up the steps onto the pathway and turn to your left along the wall (in fact you are walking west) with the cliff to your right. You will at times have to leave the wall as parts of it are not in good repair. Stay on the track on or next to the wall. Always follow the ridge, you will pass the milecastles which today appear as very low walls in a large square. Each one is marked with a number, usually on the step, and you will pass two on your route 37 & 38.

Once you have passed the second milescastle (38) continue on following the track along the high ridge with the lake on your right. As you descend from the ridge you will see a tall tree and this is noticeable by the fact that it stands on its own. Another object stands by the tree.

Q. Describe what it is.

Turn left off the track down a slope with the tree behind you, turning left again and retrace your steps back along the Military Way to Housesteads Fort. Because the area is rugged the path may not always be clear, so when heading back always keep Hadrians Wall on your left and you will not get lost!
